How disc brakes work
Disc brakes consist of a rotating disc (mounted to the wheel hub or drive shaft) and calipers with cylinders and brake pads. Although it looks simple, a brake pad is a complex, multi-layered component.
The blocks use:
- specially adapted metal plates without clearance,
- anti-vibration paint,
- thermal insulation adhesives,
- resins reinforced with ceramic particles.
When to change brake pads?
- When the friction layer is reduced to a few millimeters.
- Always replace in pairs - on the same axis.
- When replacing the parking brake pads, it is necessary to re-adjust the mechanism.
The most common causes of failures:
- Prolonged downhill braking without engine braking → overheating → glassy coating appears → ineffective braking.
- Even the smallest cylinder leaks can damage the brakes. Always check the seals.
